You don't always have to spend top dollar at your local pet store to obtain the tastiest - and healthiest - treats for your dog. Your dog might already have a list of favourites he'll gladly provide you with to help you out - but which may be suspect because they could be made overseas and not made in the most savoury of conditions - like commercial chicken jerky, which the FDA would kindly ask you to not feed your dog.
Hot Summer Snack Ideas
Many of us give our dogs ice cubes to snack on when it's hot outside, but you can jazz them up with other flavourings: Try freezing mashed up fruits and veggies like bananas, strawberries, sweet potatoes or squash in ice cube trays. Baby food and yogurt also freeze well, and for larger dogs you can try freezing your ingredients in cupcake liners instead of ice cube trays - just let them thaw for a couple of minutes so you can remove the paper before giving the frozen treat to your dog.
Dogs N Pawz also has a great list of frozen treat ideas, including frozen pumpkin pops - which may just give your dog the same warm fuzzes you get when you take the initial sip of your first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the season - fall will be here soon, after all.
When cooking for your dog, make sure you aren't using any ingredients that could potentially be toxic to dogs, including raisins, chocolate and some types of nuts. For a list of toxic foods, click here.
Not all dogs do well with people foods, so make sure you know how your dog reacts to the ingredients used before feeding them to him.
We've scoured the internet and found some great recipes for homemade dog treats. Some of them look like great projects for you and your dog on a lazy summer day!

The average dog poops between a half-pound and three-quarters of a pound per day. That's a lot of fiber for Fido!
It's super convenient for dispensing poop bags in a pinch AND its easy on the environment.
Dogs are particularly fond of cat poop because cat poop is high in protein. I had a friend with a dog and a cat, and he never had to clean the kitty litter. The dog took care of it.
