How Fostering Helps Shelters

Providing a temporary home for a pup until they find their forever home can be mutually beneficial for both dog and human. Welcoming a pet into your home can provide companionship while offering a safe space for a rescue to wait out their adoption. But fostering a dog can also have a huge impact on animal rescues by freeing up crucial space for other dogs in need of shelter. We spoke to four organizations close to our hearts to learn more about the positive impact fostering can have on shelters.

Here's what they had to say:

"Fostering is so important to saving the lives of shelter animals. Whether short or long term, fostering gives pets a much-needed break from the kennel environment, along with giving our rescue team valuable information about the pet's personality and behavior in a home. ACPB provides all necessary supplies as well as medical care, so fostering is free!" -Angel City Pits

"Because we are a foster-based rescue with no physical shelter, we only have the capacity to save as many dogs as we have foster parents. When you become a foster parent with Muddy Paws Rescue, you will personally be saving the life of a dog who might have otherwise not received a second chance. We provide our fosters with everything they need, including supplies and ongoing support, so that they can give us just 2-3 weeks of their time to open their home to a pup in need." -Muddy Paws Rescue

"EOPR is a completely foster-based rescue - so each and every one of our dogs live with incredibly dedicated foster families before adoption. Rescuing mainly dogs from overseas, most of them have lived in a shelter only and not ever experienced life in a home setting before, so foster homes for our dogs to settle into are so important. Our foster families work so very hard to help our dogs decompress and adjust to their new lives, and provide basic training to help them become the best versions of themselves and prepare them for their forever homes! We absolutely could not do what we do without our fosters." -Eastern Ontario Potcake Rescue

"We are 100% volunteer-run and all our dogs live in foster homes across the Gatineau and Ottawa area. We don't have a shelter building so we rely heavily on our amazing foster homes! Without them, we wouldn't be able to continue helping dogs from local shelters." -Sit With Me
